Is Mobile Smart?
Forty percent of mobile phone users over 18 in the US now have smart phones according to a July 2011 study by Nielsen. Google Android is the most popular mobile phone OS with 40% of the smart phone market, followed by Apple iOS with 28% and RIm BlackBerry with 19%. Active smart phones are expected to outnumber feature phones in the US by the end of 2011.

There's not always an app for that. According to CTIA, mobile phone penetration in the US is 96%. Nearly all of these mobile phones are capable of "texting" (SMS). Over 2 billion text messages are sent in the US each year, almost 188 billion every month. According to Nielsen, 95% of US mobile users ages 15-24 report they use SMS with young women being slightly more texty than young men.
